
The Northallerton and District Local History
Society was established to generally cover
the area of the boundaries of the old Wapentake of Allertonshire. Its aims are
to:
a) to encourage and develop an
interest in and awareness of all aspects of the area's history
b) to study the area's history and
heritage
c) to work with others to secure the
preservation and protection of the area's history
d) to collect and disseminate
information of the history of the area
To these ends, the Society undertakes
a range of activities. These include:
-Promoting research into subjects
related to its aims, and publishing it.
-Acting as a co-ordinating body and
co-operating with various voluntary and professional bodies sharing its aims.
-Publishing documents.
-Undertaking surveys and making maps,
plans and drawings of items and areas of historic interest, in addition to
providing information to the public about them.
-Hold meetings, lectures and displays
to inform the public about local history.
-Allying itself with various other
organisations to bring various projects to completion.
-Encouraging the teaching of Local
History in schools and other places of learning.

Anyone who wishes to help the
Society
in its aims is welcome to become a member of it. Membership requires the payment
of a subscription, with Student Membership being available for those under 18.
In return for this payment, members are allowed to vote at the General Meeting and receive
free entry to various talks organised by the Society.
The society is organised around a
central committee, which is responsible for its running. This is made up of four
elected members ( a Chair, Vice Chair, Honorary Secretary and Honorary
Treasurer), four additional offices appointed by the committee ( a Programme Secretary,
Minutes Secretary, Membership Secretary and Publicity Officer) and two other
members. An AGM is held every year
The Society is a member of the
British Association for Local History.
